16th of July 2014:
THE CREATORS OF THE PATAGONIAN INTERNATIONAL MARATHON BRINGS ULTRA TRAIL TO TORRES DEL PAINE
Immersed in the vast beauty of Torres del Paine National Park, the first edition of the Ultra Trail Torres del Paine promises trail running at its best. Racing in semi autonomy, the race is laid out for the 26th of September 2014, which is just a day before the Patagonian International Marathon. With varying distances of 42 km and 67 km, the trail route will lead through paths of forests, rocks, valleys and prairie that highlight the spectacular views of snow-capped mountains, glacier-fed lakes and the unique wildlife of the region.
The Torres del Paine National Park is an official UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve located in Chilean Patagonia at the southernmost tip of the country. With the Ultra Trail taking place in the majestic and demanding surroundings of the National Park, the race aims to present both a unique experience and a grand challenge that keeps the spirit of Ultra Trail events alive. With the new Ultra Trail Torres del Paine being the first official trail running event authorized by CONAF, it will mark the first milestone of what could be a series of trail running events in this majestic national park.
Aside from introducing ultra trail running in Chilean Patagonia, the event has also met the requirements of the International Trail Running Association as one of the The North Face® Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc® 2015 Qualification Race. Runners of the Ultra Trail Torres del Paine will garner 2 qualifying points, which is just 6 points shy of qualifying for the The North Face® Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc® 2015.
“After a long run with the Patagonian Expedition Race® and the Patagonian International Marathon, we continue to develop international events that consist of life experiences. Our new event, Ultra Trail Torres del Paine, will open a door to runners from all over the world to enjoy running in the trails of fascinating places at the extreme south of the world,” said Stjepan Pavicic, the race director of the event. “Moreover, we continue to aid in the sustainable development of the local communities of the region and the conservation of these areas.”
Technically comparable with Cross-Country Running, trail running is mainly executed in mountainous terrain. Known globally through events such as France’s The North Face® Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc, Japan’s Ultra-Trail Mount Fuji, Italy’s Lavaredo Ultra Trail, Spain’s The North Face® Transgrancanaria, Morroco’s Marathon des Sables, Australia’s The North Face® 100 or USA’s Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run, trail running’s ultra version is an embodiment of the hardest and physically most demanding races.
“Considering the difficulty level of ultra trail running, we encourage experienced and bold runners to take on the challenge of running at the end of the world,” said Stjepan Pavicic. “As the demands of the community of endurance and outdoor sport lovers increase, we found this as an opportunity to not only expand the disciplines of sporting events we organize but also further promote one of the majestic gems of Chilean Patagonia, which is Torres del Paine.”
Registration to the event may be made through the event’s website:
All participants who have already registered for the Patagonian International Marathon are allowed to change their event until the 25th of July.
